Preserving Indigenous Traditions |
|
Ancient healing practices are increasingly threatened amongst many Indigenous groups as a result of the introduction of Western medicine, many years of missionary activity which often (but not in all cases) demonizes the use of traditional shamanic healing practices and the growing influence of the West. On many main river communities in the Amazon, medicinal plants and ancient healing practices are now only remembered by the elders and true, experienced traditional healers are often hard to find.
More people of the Amazon are leaving their villages for the cities with the risk that their traditions, culture and time honored knowledge of the rainforest’s medicinal plants will be lost. With the forests empty, no one will be left behind in the rural communities to steward what is in our common interest.
We aim to support solutions to these threats through sponsoring the development of community-based (and owned) projects, which foster the active preservation of traditional knowledge combined with the best practices of Western medicine, development and education, thereby offering integrated solutions.
We aim to release information about our traditional medicines program in the coming months...
